Database backup using T-Sql
I want to backup the database to a local drive say c:\databaseBk and a remote Server.
I tried
BACKUP DATABASE Mydb TO AlternativeServer but am getting errors here.
I know there is more to it and I also tried as below...
Even backup to remote for now would be perfect...if anyone has the code to do this locally that would be great also...
I got this from BooksOnline.....
USE Mydb
EXEC sp_addumpdevice 'disk', AlternativeServer,
DISK ='c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\BACKUP\Mydb.dat'
-- Back up
BACKUP DATABASE MyNwind TO MyNwind_1I've got another one for your collection:
DUMP DATABASE dbname TO device WITH NOUNLOAD , INIT , NOSKIP
Where is the problem lays?
Regards,
OBRP|||As far as I know you can not backup DB on the remote server - only on a local device (tape or drive).|||You can backup on a remote computer by :
backup database dbname to disk='\\remote\server\path\filename.dbk' with init, noskip,NOUNLOAD
This should help you to backup it up to a remote computer without any problem.
Thanks.|||Make sure yours sqlserver runs on domain wide account, or account with write rights on remore compute.

Database Backup question
I have a tape drive that my data base it backed up to. I'm running SQL
Server 7 and I backup the entire MSSQL7 folder.
I needed to restore some data in the database. The file was going to
restore was my_database_name.mdf.
Is that the actual database file, and if not, what is?
The reason I ask is because when looking at the file in Windows Explorer,
the date modified was from a week ago, and I know the database has been
modified since then...it changes daily of course.
So basically...if I wanted to back up the database not using the backup in
SQL server, but the one I use for my tape drive, which file or files would I
back up? Any why doesn't the date modified show the current date, since the
database has been modified today?
Thanks
Dan
It's normal that the database file has an old time stamp even it's being
changed actively. The timestamp seems to reflect the time that the file gets
created.
The .mdf file is the data file, not the backup file. you can't restore from
it. You can use sp_attach_db to attach it. If you want to restore, probably
look for a backup file (with or without extension).
HTH.

|||In order to successfully backup your .MDF and .NDF files (data and log),
using the scenario that you posed, you must FIRST stop the MSSQLServer
service. While SQL Server is running, those files will be open and you will

Another option is to perform an sp_detachdb and once detached, backup the
data file.
You should really use the Backup features in SQL Server however.

By default, everything in your PRIMARY filegroup is in the one .mdf
file.
You can set up additional filegroups which are separately restorable.

Database Backup in SQL Server failover Clustering.
I have done MS SQL Server failover clustering with SQL Server 2000
as
One Active node and one Passive Node.
I have set G: drive as a Clustered Drive where Database Files are
placed.
Now i want to take a backup of the database locally on Non-Clustered
Disk .
Is it possible to do this. If yes then please let me know How?
Please give me reply.
Thanks & Regards,

Thanks for your reply.
I have create a backup job which will take a full database backup
at 9:00 PM every night.
But my concern here is that, the backup will happened on local disk
of node which is online but if that node goes offline then the backup
will happened on another node which is online or not.
this is my please reply to this as it is production issue.

I assume you have your data files on your G:\ drive which is a shared drive
that is accessible to the cluster and part of a cluster group.
You want to backup your database to a local drive other than that g:\ drive.
So you want to back up to a non-shared drive such as the c:\ drive?
I would not suggest that. I would suggest that you backup your databases to
a separate shared array that is clustered and in your cluster group.

If the backup job points to say C:\backup, it should always save it to the
local C: drive of the active node.
If you always want it to a specific node, create a share and use the UNC
path: \\node2\backup.
However, I wouldn't do this OR to another disk on the cluster.
I'd backup to a disk on a separate machine. For example, we've got a Snap
4200 that we backup to a UNC on.

Thanks for your reply.
Now, i try to make it more simple.
I have to nodes in a Active/Passive Cluster.
Where node A is Passive and Node B is Active.
I have same drive on both the nodes that is, C: D: E: Q: and G:
where G: is clustered
disk & Of course here Q: is Quorum disk.
Here i schedule daily backup on E: drive, which is same location
on both the nodes.
as my node B is active the backup is pointing to E: drive of node
B.
Now my point here is if my node B becomes Passive and node A
active then backup
will point to E: drive of Node A or it fails.
Thanks & Regards,
Sajid N.Chhapekar.

local disk which exists on both node A and B. The backups will work fine, and store the backup file
on the local drive (which one depends on what node is the active node). The database engine doesn't
really know or care whether it is clustered, it just sees a number of drives.
But here's a scenario which might make you re-consider:
Node A does backup locally.
It then fails, and you also have to do a restore.
Node B is started and you cannot get to the backup file produced by node A, because that node has
failed and stored the backup locally.

Thanks for reply.
I understand what u are trying to say.
In this case, as we have windows backup stratergy which backup the
the folder where backup file is stored.
So, that if one node fails where backup file is stored, we can get
it from backup tape.
Thanks & Regards,

I am surprised that you have X transactions rolled forward if you detached the database... You could
try sp_single_file_attach and see if that work with only the mdf file. If not, I suggest you open a
case with MS support.

Database Attach error encountered
Would appreciate any inputs.
I am running SQL2005. I am trying to attach to a database located on an external hard drive that is connected to my laptop via USB connection. The database files are a copy of the database files from a server running SQL2005.
After making the copy of the database, we confirmed that we could attach to the database on the external drive from the server and were successful attaching, opening and accessing the copy. Brought the HD home to work with the database and am getting the following error when I try to attach:

It looks as though your problem is a permissions problem. When you're at home you're using a different login context than you are when you're at work. The external HD allows the work login access, but not the home login. I'd look at the security tab under the properties menu item for the directory where the database files are stored and see if you can add your home login to the list of allowed users.

know how much data you will lose. I strongly encourage you to either restore from a healthy backup,
or open a case with MS Support.

Exactly! That is my problem now. Here is error message:
I/O error (torn page) detected during read at offset 0x0000002979e000 in file "c:\XXXXXX"
What should I do to fix it?
Thanks in advance,
LX

Detaching a suspect database can lead to big problems, especially since you cannot attach a
corrupt database. If the database is suspect because of recovery failures, and you try to attach it
again, the attach command will fail.

Database "Suspect"
any clue from the error log. The drive has plenty of free spaces. I don't
have the backup files. Any suggestion to recover?
